Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 in Lynn Massachusetts. Ruth Roman was the first child born to Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. After her father died as a Carnival barker when Ruth was just an infant and she was forced to provide for the family by working as a maid and server. Ruth attended the school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She only attended the school for two years, before leaving to pursue her acting profession. It was a difficult path to follow. While she was offered an opportunity in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine but no theater jobs was offered. Then, after a period as a hat-wearing club girl after which she decided to come back home and quit her position. As an usherette, she worked during the day and then appeared at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first ever permanent acting job. She earned a bachelor's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
